Comida!

I learned that when trying something new, I need to take it slow, because you never know how your body will react to new diets and food.

However, when I eat fish or vegetables from Spain, I feel great. Everything is fresh here. The fish that I ate was caught that day and the fruits and vegetables are from the local farms. Asturias is especially known for the freshness of its food.

How is the food prepared?:

Food is prepared very carefully here in Spain— so carefully that there are separate stores for different products! There are fish stores, meat stores, fruit and vegetable stores, and pastry shops. Each shop sells only that type of food, and it is usually way cheaper than buying it at the bigger grocery stores. Yes, you can find all of these things in the local grocery store, but a lot of people go to separate stores to buy certain things.

Most food in Spain is prepared that day or morning. A lot of the meat that people buy is freshly cut for when they order it. A lot of people in Spain prepare food with what Americans might consider an insane amount of oil. My roommates cook their vegetables in pots of oil. I do not cook with a lot of oil, but it is common to do that here.

Is this food connected to the local environment? How?:

Food in Asturias is very much connected to the local environment. It is very rare that you see people buying products that are from a place outside of Asturias. Many people support the local farms and the local economy by buying only Asturian products. Asturias is a part of Spain that is dropping in population. In the past, Asturias was a money-making part of Spain because of all of the coal mines.
