Asturias: El Paraíso Natural

The beaches and mountains also help people live here because they provide other tourism-related sources of income for the locals. People can go skiing, hiking, running, or take surf classes, and a lot of these activites can be run through organizations which provide more jobs for the community.

What challenges do people face living in this environment?:

The main challenge that people face in this environment right now is climate change. Usually, the people here do not face many problems, but in recent years the rain season hasn't been the same. There has been little to no rain here and it has caused a huge decrease in the production of crops. Many families struggle to grow crops to run their businesses.

How have people been adapting to this environment?:

People have been adapting to the environment, unfortunately, by moving outside of Asturias. After the mines were closed and with this new change in the climate, many people are moving to other areas of Spain. Many people move to the Basque country or to Madrid where living is more expensive, but there are more opportunities to find work. Spain has a very high perecentage of unemployment, so many people, especially those living in Asturias, are moving to places where they can find the work they need to survive.
