The offical language of Belize is English, but the other two prominant languages are Kriol and Spanish. In other parts of the country people might speak Garifuna, Q'echi', Mopan or Yucatec Mayan. Belize has a lot of different cultural groups, and many people are bilingual, knowing English and another language.
The Belizean dollar (BZD) is used here. Two Belize dollars are equal to one US Dollar (USD). This means the exchange rate is $2 BZD = $1 USD.
A bottle of water costs $1 BZD. Can you do the math to figure out how much that bottle of water would cost in USD?
I ate shrimp ceviche from my favorite spot in town. To make shrimp ceviche, the shrimp is gently poached, placed into boiling water for five minutes and then marinated in fresh lime juice which "cooks" the shrimp, making it safe to eat. Then tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, salt, pepper and cilantro are all mixed together with the shrimp to make a yummy mixture. The ceviche is then served with fresh tortilla chips and eaten like chips and salsa. Here in Belize, people also make conch and octopus ceviche, but the shrimp is my favorite. It's so refreshing, and you feel full afterwards.
