When I was graduating from high school, my mom was terrified that I would leave Miami to go to university. But I trusted in myself and knew that leaving home would bring so much growth. I left my city and moved to Washington, D.C. to start my journey. Little did I know that moving to another state would eventually result in moving to another country for a semester! Without realizing it, every decision I made, from choosing my major to selecting which clubs to participate in, prepared me for going abroad with an open mind and gave me the critical tools to adapt to other cultures.
One of my biggest fears about going to university, and then about deciding to go abroad, was figuring out how I would survive on my own. I had to learn to trust my sense of direction and have the courage to ask questions when I was in doubt. I also had to strengthen my ability to connect with others, regardless of where I was. In the end, I can proudly say I achieved all of these things! This semester I traveled with confidence around the city and to many other parts of the country. I strengthened my ability to ask thoughtful questions and listen to stories from people from around the world. I also made unexpected friendships that will continue to grow even after I go back home.
