Ancient Tradition of Carving & Sculpting

Also, you may be able to spot some statues and remains of pottery and fabrics due to grave robbery before the hypogea were constituted as protected areas.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

In both San Agustín and Tierradentro, the sculptures are believed to be funeral related. While the statues were discovered in 1756 by a Spanish monk, the origin of the carvers and purpose of the carvings remains a mystery, since most of the site is unexcavated and no writings have been discovered yet. Researchers have too observed that the details in the sculptures and patterns of the paintings and architecture are alike in Tierradentro and San Agustín! It may be inferred then, that these ancient communities were connected.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

The ancient civilizations that created these massive sculptures and deep tombs clearly had a deep connection to the earth. First, they used stone and volcanic rock which they were able to take from the earth. Next, the crafts that they created were often representations of the earth's creation: animals, astronomical objects, and other unexplained, earth-based phenomena. Lastly, in both San Agustín and Tierradentro, the ancient civilizations created tombs for people to be buried in the earth.
