Eating Cevapi!

Introduction:

For this week, I've decided to share one of the most commonly eaten and iconic foods of this region.

What food did I try?:

I ate some cevapi! It is a type of grilled meat that can be found just about anywhere in the Balkans, central Europe and southeastern Europe, from roadside stands to fancy restaurants.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

It really hit the spot!

How is the food prepared?:

Cevapi are made of ground meat which is usually a mix of some or all of ground lamb, beef and pork. The meat is mixed with ingredients that can include onions, garlic, an egg or two, dried red pepper flakes, salt and pepper and then shaped and put on a grill. Individual cevapi are small and cylindrical, though sometimes two or four individual pieces are put together into a kind of square patty. The bun (called lepinja) is made of a thick spongy dough, which is kind of similar to pizza crust in its consistency. Cevapi are usually served with sliced raw onion, and can also be served with a side of kajmak (a kind of creamy butter), ajvar (a sauce made from chopped bell pepper and eggplant which is then boiled or fried) or a yogurt-based sauce.

Is this food connected to the local environment? How?:

Cevapi have been eaten throughout the region for hundreds of years.
