Nature News

The abundance of animals is one of the things I love most about living in Lesotho!

What was the coolest thing I saw in nature this week?:

It didn't happen this week, but when my cat gave birth last month, she gave birth to her first baby on my bed while I was scrolling through social media on my phone! She had curled up next to my legs and I heard a noise so I looked down, and she had pushed out a kitten! I didn't even know she was pregnant. I then went outside for a few hours to give her some space and to do my laundry, and when I came inside later, I sat down on the floor next to her and she gave birth to her second kitten. Prior to this, I had never seen any animal give birth, so this was a very special moment for me.

Other Nature News from this week:

I just returned from an incredible trip to Cape Town, where I ventured to a nearby coastal city called Hermanus. It is one of the best places in the world to see whales, particularly southern right whales and humpback whales. There are so many whales that if you stand overlooking the water, you'll see enough whales breaching and flapping their tails that you won't know where to look! I also went on a whale watching boat tour to interact up close with these incredible creatures. Birthing season has recently passed, so most of the whales we saw were mothers with their young. We were luckly enough to spot a rare brindle calf, which means the whale was born mostly white with some black spots. Southern right whales are famous for being curious. They are intrigued by the noises coming from boats and will swim right up to you to investigate!
