However, plastic waste is widely recognized to be harmful to the environment. In order to discourage the use of plastic bottles and facilitate recycling to prevent the creation of such waste, there is an extra cost (in German: a “Pfand”) associated with buying anything in a plastic bottle. This is generally €0.25 for a standard plastic bottle of water, bringing the final price to around €0.75 (or 0.89 US dollars). After you finish drinking the water, you can return the plastic bottle at designated recycling stations called “Pfandstation” and get the €0.25 back.

What was the best meal this week?:

My best meal this week was actually eaten at the cafeteria located in the building I work at. I have included a picture of it, and it doesn’t look too visually appealing. You’ll just have to trust me when I say that it tasted quite good. On the large plate on the left was something like hash browns but in a patty or pancake form.  At the top of the plate was a couple of pieces of something like spinach-filled, square ravioli that are called “Maultaschen” in German. The rest of the plate is filled out with steamed vegetables. The cream broccoli soup in the bowl was surprisingly nice.

What music did I listen to this week?:

I listen to a lot of music from many different genres. I have a special soft spot for classical music because I play classical piano. Munich has a strong classical music community and offers a lot of concerts that are very cheap to attend for people under 30. I recently bought tickets to a performance of Brahm’s Piano Concerto No. 2, so that piece of music has been on my mind (and on my heavy listening rotation) this week.
