The official language of Germany is German (no surprise here!). However, the German sounds a bit different depending on what region of the country you are in, despite all regions sharing the same alphabet, grammar and most words. These slight variations on the language are called its dialects. For instance, in Bavaria, the southern part of Germany where Munich is located, people will generally say Servus as “hello”. In contrast, other parts of Germany use Hallo as “hello”. Other than German, most of the young population speaks some English as it is commonly taught as a separate class or subject in their equivalent of K-12 schooling.
Germany uses Euros (pronounced yer-ohs) as currency like the rest of the European Union (a group of countries in Europe including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Italy and others). Germany is still quite a cash-based country, meaning that there are many cases where you cannot pay with a credit card or electronically and must use physical money notes. There’s a saying in Germany “Nur Bares ist Wahred” which basically means “Only cash is real.”
