To make flammkuchen, we start with a dough made out of flour, salt, and water. The dough has to be rolled out really, really thinly into a circle or rectangle using a rolling pin. If it's not thin enough, it won't cook properly! Once we have rolled out the dough, we put on some sour cream and any other toppings we want. Then it goes in the oven for 8 minutes, and it's done!
Yes! Flammkuchen is really fun to eat, because every flammkuchen is different depending on what toppings you use. Germans like to use fresh ingredients, so usually, flammkuchen is topped with whatever fruits, vegetables, and nuts are in season! Right now, lots of peaches and rhubarb are being harvested, so every flammkuchen I eat uses those.
