Sometimes people get sad in the winter because we don't see the sun very much, which is another challenge. How would you find a way to have fun if it was always dark outside?
In Kiel, we have a lot of special traditions to help make winter a little more fun, even though we don't get very much sunshine. Most German houses light candles to put in the windows, and we try to decorate our rooms with bright colors like red, yellow and green. There are also lots of festivals in the winter where the whole town gets decorated with lights! Last November, me and my friends went to a huge light festival in Kiel. We learned how to make candles, joined a parade of people carrying lanterns through the street and watched a light show with lasers at our local city hall! There were lots of kids and families there, and the kids had a lot of fun going on "lantern walks" with their homemade lanterns. Even though the winter can feel really long sometimes, people here make the most of it by getting cozy with their family and friends. Some of my favorite days this year were the ones I spent with a plate of fresh cookies, a warm blanket and a good book!
