In the Canary Islands specifically, physical and chemical stressors often pose the biggest threat. Even if the grass grows deep, large offshore storms can cause unusually strong waves that travel across the Atlantic and wreak havoc on the seagrass below. Also, human development releases chemicals into coastal waters that choke or starve the seagrass, leading to death and die-offs. The Canary Islands does not have as much seagrass as it used to, and that's why people are working so hard to figure out how to restore it. We're worried about the seagrass here, as we are for all seagrass around the world. But the good news is that initial restoration experiments have shown promising results. We are hopeful that we may be able to slow the destruction and help build back the meadows.
