The Ecosystem in Senegal

Introduction:

Baobabs are beautiful trees that can live for over 5,000 years and grow to be up to 30 meters (about 100 feet) tall! The baobab tree is commonly referred to as the "tree of life". If you have ever been to Disney World's Animal Kingdom, the big tree in the middle of the park is a baobab tree. Baobab trees have many uses to people and animals, from providing food to shelter and even medicine.

What does this creature or plant look like?:

Baobabs have a wide trunk with branches that grow out from the top. Unlike the trees we see in America, the first branches of a baobab tree may be 30-40 feet off the ground! The branches and leaves grow out and up from the trunk, creating a crown for the tree where fruit can grow and hang down.

How did I feel when I saw it?:

When I first saw a baobab, I was surprised at how large it was. I had read about these trees but I could not imgaine how big they would really be. They are very beautiful trees with bright green leaves. I think that it is interesting how they can grow in areas that look so dry and where there is not a lot of other plant life.

Where does it live?:

Baobab trees can be found in several African countries including Madagascar. They are usually found in countries that are hot and dry with short wet seasons like Senegal, countries in Central Africa, India, and even in Australia!
