This remarkable region plays multiple crucial roles including maintaining biodiversity, regional hydrology and climate and terrestrial carbon storage. It provides a habitat for an astonishing array of wildlife with approximately one-third of all animal species on the planet residing there. The Amazon boasts an impressive variety of flora as well, with 56,000 described plant species. Covering 60% of Brazil, the Amazon rainforest controls a significant portion of carbon dioxide release and oxygen return, making it an essential player in the global ecosystem (Laurance et al. 2001).
Where I live on Marajó Island, it is a paradise for nature lovers with its incredible variety of ecosystems and stunning landscapes. The island's thick rainforests are home to a wide range of plant life like the tall Brazil nut trees, beautiful orchids and plants used by indigenous communities for healing purposes. The wetlands and mangrove forests provide a safe haven for numerous bird species including the vibrant scarlet ibis and graceful herons. Exploring the meandering rivers and hidden lagoons might even give you a chance to spot caimans, a slivering anaconda, giant river otters and the rare pink dolphins. Marajó Island's nature is truly captivating, filling us with a sense of wonder and amazement.
One of the most fascinating features of Marajó Island is its vast savannahs called "campos." These open grasslands, dotted with patches of forest, are home to a special collection of wildlife. Here, you might come across the impressive water buffalos. These giants freely roam the campos, happily grazing on the lush grass. The savannahs also provide a habitat for capybaras, armadillos and various bird species like the striking crested caracara.
