In many European countries, peat is used for energy and there are many conservation initiatives to slow down or stop that practice. All the peatlands in the world together represent only a little portion of the earth’s surface, so it is essential that we ensure the conservation of the remaining peatlands.
Another thing that scientists are working on is how to restore peatlands so that they can store carbon from the atmosphere and help us to reduce climate change. This restoration includes rewetting peatlands and replanting the important moss. Stay tuned for my next article where we’ll talk about what my day in a peatland looks like!
