Beep Beep! How I Get Around in Peru

Introduction:

Hi class!

It has been so fun talking with you on our video calls and sharing my experiences in Peru while hearing about what you are learning in class.

One of the ways Peru is different from the United States is how people get from one place to another.

How do you get to school each day? Do you ride a yellow school bus? Do you go in a car? Or do you walk?

What if there were no yellow school buses where you live?

In this field note, I’ll show you the unique ways we travel around in Peru!

How do people get around?:

In rural Peru, most families do not have their own cars.

Does that surprise you?

If your family didn’t have a car, how would you get to school or the grocery store?

Where I live, people use public transportation. That means transportation that everyone shares. One way to travel is by taxi. To get a taxi, you stand on the side of the road and wait for one to drive by. When you see one, you wave your hand to flag it down. If the taxi has space, it will stop and pick you up!

Can you imagine standing on the side of the road and waving at a car to make it stop?

Another way to travel is by combi.
