Bikes, Scooters and Feet!

Introduction:

Every morning when I wake up to go to class, I walk from my apartment to the metro station. I live on the end of one of four different metro lines. Each metro line has a different color: red, blue, yellow and green. Lots of people also take the yellow cable cars that run throughout the city. They are like buses, but they run along rails in the ground. The drivers ring a bell to warn people on the street that the trolley is coming, and you can hear the wheels screeching on the pavement. There are so many different ways to get around Lisbon like biking or taking a scooter, but I prefer to walk when I can. That way, I can look into shop windows, practice listening to Portuguese and enjoy the sunshine. Lisbon is built on a set of hills, so I am often climbing stairs or facing a steep incline to get to where I need to go. But the view from the top is always worth it!

How do people get around?:

Residents commuting to work here might use cars, bikes or scooters to get from place to place. In Lisbon, the streets are very narrow, so cars are very small. Some people also ride motorcycles, so that they can park more easily. Recently, many people have started to share bikes and electric scooters. There are central locations where you can pick up a bike or scooter from a rack. You use an application on your phone to rent the bike or scooter for a few minutes while you ride.
