A Bittersweet Parting Message from South Korea!

The city also experienced many changes during the period of Japanese occupation in the early 20th century.

During the Korean War in 1950, there were also very sad events where many civilians lost their lives. This reminds us that history can include both proud and difficult moments, and it’s important to continue talking and learning from these events! And now, if someone asks you anything about Korean history, you can share a unique story about a small country town that many tourists often overlook!

Last week I got to explore even more of Korea by visiting 포항 (Po-hang) and 경주 (Gyeong-ju), and both places helped me understand this idea of the importance of history better. Pohang is a coastal city where I enjoyed ocean views, fresh seafood and a peaceful atmosphere. Along much of the beach, there are checkpoints that were built during World War II and the Cold War, and they are still being used by the U.S. and Korean military today. There are even some older, worn-down bases from the Japanese that serve as a reminder of that chapter of Korean history.

Gyeongju is a very special city, as it feels like stepping back in time. It used to be the old Silla Dynasty capital for almost 1,000 years, which makes it the cultural center of one of the longest-lasting dynasties in human history. It has a nickname of “the museum without walls” because it is filled with historical sites like tombs, temples, and old Korean-style 한옥 (Han-ok) houses.

I hope that this piece was interesting and that you continue to stay curious about the world. You never know where your interests might take you and what opportunities may come your way. I’m excited for all the paths you’ll create for yourselves. It's time to get excited about life!!
