It’s officially been over six months since I first landed in the Czech Republic and began my journey as an English Teaching Assistant in Bruntál. In those six months, I have had quite the adventure, and I can’t wait to close out the final four months of my stay by filling them with as many memories as possible.

When I first landed in Prague and met up with my brand-new colleague before our five-hour drive to my new home, I was filled with a wide range of emotions. Though I didn’t let any of my family or friends know it before leaving, I was pretty terrified. Moving to a country you’ve never visited is always scary, but moving to a small town hours away from the city, where English is rarely spoken, took things to a whole new level. I felt very uncertain about where life and this new role would take me, and while that was scary, it was also exciting.

The first few weeks were hard. Everything was new. I jumped into teaching even though I had never really done it before. I had my first awkward encounters at the store as I struggled to find ingredients, and I got a lot of stares as I tried to explain in broken Czech that I was from the U.S. and didn’t understand the language.
