Exploring the Wonders of Petra: A Journey Through Ancient History

One stop took us to a place where sacrifices had been made to these gods--a solemn reminder of the rituals that once took place there.

As we walked deeper into Petra, we saw several other striking features. One of the most remarkable was a giant camel carved into the stone—a symbol of the importance of camels in the region’s history and trade. The natural pink sandstone of Petra made it easier for the Nabateans to carve the stone into intricate and monumental designs. The path we were walking on was cut right through the stone, and on either side, we could see massive stone reliefs that seemed to tell stories of ancient times.

After a while, we reached the end of the path. Light began to peek through, and I could sense that we were about to encounter something extraordinary. The Treasury came into full view—an awe-inspiring, towering façade, carved into the side of the mountain. This was the iconic temple from Indiana Jones, and standing in front of it, I couldn’t help but feel like an adventurer on a thrilling expedition.

The area around the Treasury was bustling with tourists from all over the world, as well as Arabs from the region. There were men dressed in full Bedouin clothing working in tourism, offering camel rides to visitors. I eagerly got in line for my turn, excited to take a ride. I was surprised at how large camels are—they’re even bigger than horses! And they are incredibly well-trained. Unlike horses, camels kneel fully to allow their riders to mount. It was a strange and fascinating experience to climb onto the camel, but I felt connected to the region’s history in a new way by doing so.

After the camel ride, I made my way up to the Treasury to take in the view.
