The Highs and Lows of Food in France

Introduction:

French cuisine is super-different from food in America, and sometimes this is the hardest part of living abroad. Missing tex-mex from Casa Garcias or the reliability of an HEB really does happen, but it's not all bad! French cuisine is often reduced to a stereotype of bread and cheese. While the food here may be decadent (and, true, often bread oriented), there are also many dishes that stand out in contrast to any other cuisine I have tried before. I am not a picky eater, so I have been up for trying any dish in Paris so far that has sparked my curiosity.

What food did I try?:

Eating at Camille in Le Marais (in the 3rd arrondissement) I took the ultimate culinary risk and ordered escargot (snails cooked in a garlic herb sauce). Escargot is a delicacy, served with bread for extra dipping into the sauce. Eating escargot was a fun project for dinner, as I had to use multiple utensils--to hold the shell and then to get out the snail "meat" to eat.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

At first I was unsure, but I knew I had to at least give it one try. After my first bite I was hooked—the satisfaction of succesfully maneuvering around the shell and the delicious garlic sauce made me excited to try more.
