Therefore, Bakuriani can accommodate the many people that visit the resort. A one-day adult lift ticket costs about $15, and there are many places where you can rent equipment and arrange instructors to help improve your ski and snowboard skills.
Today was my first day skiing at Bakuriani. I'm very excited because I am here as a volunteer at the FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships, joining dozens of Georgian university and high school students that are also passionate about skiing. Not only are there talented athletes competing from around the world, there are also concerts, fireworks, and carnival games that will take place from the opening of the competition to the closing on March 5. There's a "Championship Village" located near the base that features food stands, warming huts and even D.J. shows! Today was a training day, and our levels were assessed. Some volunteers will work on maintaining the course, while others are helping communicate important information to the athletes. Volunteers stay at a guest house and receive breakfast, lunch, dinner and even ski passes to use during our free time!
In addition to Bakuriani, there are four other ski destinations in Georgia. Gudauri is another large family resort. Bakhmaro, Goderdzi and Hatsvali/Tetnuldi are smaller mountains with more advanced terrain. Two weeks ago, I visited Hatsvali and Tetnuldi, located in Mestia. It was much steeper than Bakuriani, and most of the resort is best for out-of-boundary free-ride skiing. It's mostly expert terrain, and since I was skiing alone, I stayed on the safest slope. There are two lifts: one chairlift and one gondola. At the top of the gondola, there is an amazing cafe with an incredible view of the mountains.
