What is your favorite holiday? Did you know that every country has different holidays? Some are the same but are celebrated differently in different places. What holiday did you celebrate on Thursday, November 28? Did you have school? Did you eat turkey with your family?
Over here, this past Thursday was just another regular Thursday. In Spain, they do not celebrate Thanksgiving! It is a uniquely American holiday. So this week, I taught the students all about my favorite Thanksgiving traditions. Most people had never heard of the holiday before, so I was excited to share it with them!
In Spanish, Thanksgiving Day is translated as “Dia de la acción de dar gracias.” Quite a mouthful, right? It literally means the day of giving thanks. In Spain, they celebrate something similar around Christmas time. That is when they have a big meal with all of their family members and share for what they are thankful. So most of the students could relate our Thanksgiving to their own experience over Christmas.
However, the history of our Thanksgiving is unique to our country. On Thanksgiving, we remember the pilgrims and the Native Americans and the meal they shared together.
