Tour of the DMZ

Photos

This is as close as you can get to seeing North Korea from the South; the DMZ (demilitarized zone) is a line that goes all the way across the peninsula to divide the two countries
Here you can see one of the military guard posts on the northern side of the DMZ, and if you look very closely you may be able to see a North Korean soldier on duty
The helmet of a South Korean soldier from the Korean War (1950-1953); it is estimated that around 3 to 4 million people died during the Korean War
All of the students with me on the trip to South Korea; it was very interesting to experience the DMZ with them because we were all shocked and sad to learn more about what happened here
During the Korean war, North Korea created multiple tunnels connecting the two countries so that North Korean soldiers could invade the south at any time, and this is the entrance to the second tunnel that we got to tour deep in the ground
Inside the tunnel it was cold and wet, and walking through here was quite sad and very eye opening
A display telling the story of soldiers finding the tunnel in 1973 when they heard explosions underground and honoring the 8 South Korean soldiers who died in the mines from booby-traps
This line shows the official divide between North and South Korea made of the DMZ based on the 38th parallel (the old dividing line)
