Chuseok is deeply connected to the environment, serving as a celebration and prayer for a bountiful harvest. This connection is especially evident in the holiday’s focus on food. Traditional ceremonies like Charye and family gatherings revolve around tables filled with special dishes prepared specifically for the occasion. I was fortunate to experience one of these traditional foods, songpyeon. These rice cakes, filled with sesame seeds, red beans, or chestnuts, were unlike anything I had expected but were absolutely delicious,made even more special because they were prepared by a friend. In a Korean home, songpyeon is typically steamed during Chuseok, filling the house with a warm, autumnal aroma that perfectly captures the spirit of the season. Another dish I enjoyed was japchae, a savory noodle dish stir-fried in sesame oil with beef, mushrooms, onions, carrots, and spinach. Its rich, well-balanced flavors make it a must-try for anyone exploring Korean cuisine. These dishes not only highlight the importance of food during Chuseok but also reflect the season’s emphasis on togetherness, gratitude, and the joy of sharing meals with loved ones.
