In addition, bicycles are so integrated into daily life that when people have children, they will often get a new bicycle that has a carrier on the front, so that the whole family can get around together!
Language
This might seem to be the most obvious of differences between cultures, and it definitely is the cause of some of my daily challenges.
I have been working on my German by watching shows, listening to music and reading books, but I am still not at the level of a native speaker. This means that I often do not completely understand what people are saying. I have some good friends who have been helping me with my German, explaining what phrases and some words mean. I would be totally lost without them! Overall, adjusting to living in a place where I am learning the language has required me to learn how to ask for help when I need it , which is one of the most important lessons you can learn in life!
Foods:
Food here has definitely been quite different from food in the U.S., but it has been fun to learn about and eat my way through the new foods! A food which is close to the heart of many Germans is the Currywurst, which is a sausage (wurst) that is covered with a ketchup and curry powder sauce. It is often served with Pommes (french fries), and it's always a special treat when I have it for lunch!
I have also had to adjust to the fact that all stores are closed on Sundays. This means that you cannot buy food at the last minute on a Sunday before the start of the week, and this also means that it takes a bit more planning to make dinners!
