Nature News

Notably the yellow-tailed black cockatoos and the wedged-tailed eagle, less frequently observed in the park. We also saw a fair amount of introduced species, like the hog deer and rabbits. These two are not so great for the environment here because they feed on all the vegetation and compete with kangaroos and wombats.

What was the coolest thing I saw in nature this week?:

The coolest thing, hands down, was the huge flock of about 70 cockatoos flying over the study area! There were so many that it seemed like a huge carpet of screeching birds that were somewhat flying in a cohesive manner (if you can imagine that!). Except for the occasional confusion, where part of the group would break off and perch on a tree. This was an amazing thing to watch as I wasn't aware of this kind of behavior in cockatoos.

Other Nature News from this week:

I saw my supervisor capture a kangaroo, therefore, I was capable of seeing one up close and try to determine its measurements for research purposes. I need some practice to get the measurements right, but that was just amazing to try regardless (even if I didn't get it on my first time).
