The pads function like tire treads providing them with increased traction in fast, sharp turns. The short blunt claws, which are considered semi-retractable, are closer to that of a dog than of other cats. The claws work like the cleats of a track shoe to grip the ground for traction when running to help increase speed.
When I first saw a cheetah running in the wild it was a wonderful experience. The speed and grace of the animal seemed effortless, like a human machine, perfectly built for speed! Watching cheetahs run is amazing, and I was in awe to be witnessing the fastest land animal on earth. I will truly never forget it!
Cheetahs are primarily found in sub-Saharan Africa, with small populations in Iran. They inhabit a variety of environments, including grasslands, savannas and open woodlands. Many of the sub-populations are spread apart from each other and very small, sometimes only 20 cheetahs or so. Cheetahs have recently been reintroduced into India, after being extinct there for around 70 years. Hopefully, India's cheetah population will grow over time.
While cheetahs can reach remarkable speeds, they cannot sustain high-speed chases for very long. They must catch their prey in 30 seconds or less, as they cannot maintain maximum speeds for much longer. Cheetahs spend most of their time sleeping, and they are minimally active during the hottest portions of the day. They prefer shady spots and will sleep under the protection of large shady trees. Cheetahs do not hunt at night because they are most active during the morning and evening hours.
