Children's Day!

Introduction:

South Korea has many traditions and holidays throughout the year. One that was celebrated recently was Children's Day. It is a fun day for family outings and parents get to spend quality time with their children while enjoying beautiful weather. Communities also provide a lot of free events and activities in order to make this holiday really happen.

What tradition did I learn about?:

Children's Day is on May 5th, and I found out that places like museums, zoos and amusement parks offer free admission for children on this day. There are also public activities for children like Taekwondo (태권도) demonstrations. Children receive gifts, such as money, from their parents.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

The motto for Children's Day is "Be a brave and genuine child and love and help each other". After learning more about this day from my buddy So Eun, I learned that it's a family day. It's a day to reflect on children's need for love, care and respect.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

On this special day, children play a traditional Korean game called Yut.
