As someone who lived in Massachusetts for the last four years, Taiwan's winters have been paradise compared to Boston's 20-degree wind chills. Winter in Taiwan mainly consists of cooler and rainier days. This past week, the weather fluctuated between the low 80s and high 60s. Although I thought I had grown thicker skin, I will admit there have been some chilly days, so I am pleased to have much warmer weather and sunnier skies.
Taipei city is very urban so it might be difficult to spot many animals beyond the typical household dog or cat. However, my school is known for its luscious green life and trees which attract some unique creatures. This week, I was able to spot a Malayan night heron in our school courtyard. The Malayan night heron is a medium-sized bird found in Asia's forests, streams and marshes. This bird is identified by its stout body, short beak and reddish-brown neck and breast with streaks. Its upperparts are chestnut-colored with wavy patterns, while its flight feathers are dark.
