If the bus is at a red light or comes to a stop in traffic, people may quickly hop on. When I took the public bus it took a long time to get to my destination because of all the stops the bus had to make.
Cars are very expensive here. People do not buy them unless they absolutely have to. Walking, taking buses and even taking taxis are cheaper options of getting around that people use. In the city, people have started using Uber as well.
