Communities

However, once I begin my trek into the forest to camp, I will no longer have access to these luxuries. And while I am just passing through the forest for two short weeks, there are dozens of villages and hundreds of villagers without easy access to nearby towns. These villagers live their lives without running water, electricity or internet. They have learned to live with much less than we have.

Why does the community have this need?:

Remote villages do not have easy access to roads, making it difficult to transport goods, ideas and services. Some villagers have to hike 10 hours to reach the nearest town. For this reason, it is difficult to provide running water and electricity to many villages in Madagascar.

Is this need being met? How?:

In some cases, where tourism is possible, these communities are better supplied with means of transportation. In the case of the town of Ranomafana, the local research station, Centre ValBio (CVB) is able to send educators to villages to talk about conservation and human health. The villagers of Ranomafana can visit the market and some even have their medicines delivered to their village by drone. Other villages in Madagascar aren't as fortunate.
