While walking on the beach in Fiji, you might be surprised to see a snake slither from the ocean. Here in Fiji, you can find snakes called banded sea kraits. Look but don't touch them as they are very venomous (poisonous) animals. They are one of the few snakes that spend part of their lives swimming in the ocean looking for food to hunt.
Banded sea kraits are very colorful long and skinny snakes. Their smooth scales and flat tails help them swim better in the ocean. On their body, you will see big black, white and blue stripes that go across their body. These cool snakes can reach up to five feet long! That's probably taller than some of you! But don't worry, they only eat fish and eels.
When I first saw the banded sea snakes, I screamed with joy. Ever since I arrived in Fiji, I have looked for these snakes everywhere. Finally, after two months, I found ten snakes in one hour! I was in snake heaven for the rest of the day. I think it's beautiful and amazing to see how a land animal can be so good at swimming underwater. I still struggle with swimming. I hope that I can become just as good a swimmer one day as sea snakes.
