A Dip into German Winter

Why does the community have this tradition?:

Like many German holidays practices, there is a heavy religious influence. Saint Nicholas Day, or Nikolaustag,  acts as an early Christmas.  Nicholas is linked as a patron saint to children, sailors, students, teachers, and merchants as well as several miracles. He acts with his partner (whose name takes several form the most well-known one being Krampus) to award the good and punish the naughty. This is also followed by Christmas and then a celebration on the 6th of January where the three wise men going out knocking, blessing, and singing at people's doors.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

Weinnachtmarkts takes place at the beginning of winter and has existed for a long time. While originally serving as a way to help people stock up on goods for the long cold winter season, over time the markets' purpose has shifted as a way to prepare and celebrate Christmas and the winter season. The winter season can be sad and dreary with short days and long periods of time with no sun. This small festival can help fight these dismal days. All of these traditions work together to create cheer. Who doesn't love a party?
