Here, satay is something you might eat as a snack, appetizer or part of a larger meal.
Another favorite is chicken rice. Mine came with juicy chicken over rice, a bowl of broth with corn, steamed bok choy and an egg that was soaked in soy sauce. Chicken rice has become one of my go-to meals at my university because it is simple, filling and delicious.
Finally, I tried one of Singapore’s most famous breakfasts, which includes kaya toast, soft-boiled eggs and kopi, or local coffee. Kaya is a sweet spread made with ingredients like coconut, eggs and sugar. Kopi is the same as coffee in the U.S. My breakfast also included laksa, a flavorful noodle soup. This was my favorite of the three experiences!
I have loved discovering the food here! The satay was juicy, salty and full of flavor. The peanut sauce added a creamy flavor that went really well with the meat. Even though I liked all three kinds, the beef was definitely my favorite.
Chicken rice surprised me because it looks like such a simple meal, but the chicken is incredibly juicy and flavorful. I like eating the rice alongside the warm broth because it adds even more flavor. It has become a reliable meal that I eat regularly at school. I also love adding steamed vegetables so I can have a balanced meal.
However, if you came to Singapore and could only try one of these meals, I would tell you to try the Singaporean breakfast! The kaya toast was crunchy, buttery and sweet. I ate the soft-boiled eggs separately with seasoning.
