The student lives with their grandparents here in Samokov and their parents send back money.
School starts at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 2:35 p.m., however, many kids do not head straight home afterward. They may walk around town with their friends and eat at cafes. In addition, others join after school activities like football and volleyball!
Samokov is a small town. Students usually walk to school on their own or with a group of friends. The walk to school is typically about 15 minutes.
Lunch is usually enjoyed in front of the school at the local doner shop or at the gas station. They serve hot, grilled sandwiches called jobs, hot dogs, burgers, pizza, doners and other snacks!
At school, they learn and speak in Bulgarian. "Hello" in Bulgarian is zdraveĭ (здравей in Cyrillic letters).
Some common names at their school include Aleksandra for girls, which means "to defend," and Georgi (or George) for boys, which translates to "farmer." Interestingly, Bulgarian last names have both masculine and feminine forms that differ in their suffixes. Most commonly -ov/-ev is used for males and -ova/-eva for females.
