Moldova's Gold

Introduction:

Moldova is known for quite a few things, one of them being their high production of wine. In fact, Moldova has the two largest underground wine cellars in the world. What factors contribute to their great vineyards? Read on to learn more!

What makes this environment special or different?:

The Republic of Moldova has three main ecoregions and four distinctive seasons. Part of what makes its environment special is the high amount of chernozem, or black soil, that blankets 75% of the country. Black soil is the most fertile soil in the world, and there are two main areas in the world where it can be found: a region from Canada to the Great Plains in North America and from Croatia to Russia in Eurasia.

What parts of this environment help people to live here?:

As mentioned, Moldova has favorable environmental conditions, both because of the soil and the general climate. During the period when Moldova was part of the former Soviet Union, Moldova was one of the major agricultural suppliers. While the production is not as intensive anymore, many people still have gardens, orchards or vineyards. This allows for easy access to local produce, either from your own yard or from the market.
