Like many growing urban cities, Bangkok has been increasing in population size and trying to achieve further development to increase its citizens’ quality of life. Development in this sense means becoming more industrialized so that more money comes into the country and the Thai citizens can use this money to improve their quality of life. In other words, Thai citizens use this money to increase their comfort, health and overall happiness.
In the journey to achieving this growth and modernization, however, there has been a natural increase in pollution and use of resources. For example, if everyone increases their comfort by taking a taxi to work each day, that is a lot more gas being used and pollution being emitted to the air. This increase in pollution then leads to limited access to drinkable tap water and clean air.
Bangkok, and all of Thailand for that matter, has begun taking steps to reduce pollution and clean its environment. This includes reducing the use of single use plastics, limiting the amount of air pollution cars can emit, and clearing trash from land and waterways. For more immediate help, the local government is working on creating hydration stations throughout the city to provide free drinking water and educating citizens on how to filter their tap water.
