Art Conservation in Florence

Introduction:

Hi, everyone! One of the most unique and interesting things about the city of Florence is its emphasis on arts and culture, specifically related to the conservation and restoration of historic objects. "Conservation" means preserving what we already have, like taking photos of paintings as they are or putting objects behind glass in a museum, while "restoration" means changing an object to look as it once did in its original context. Can you think of why this might be important for the city based on what we've talked about as a group?

What community need did I learn about?:

So much of the city of Florence's identity is based on Renaissance artwork, as I wrote about last week. Art experts from all over the world come to Florence to maintain its massive art collection, though these needs vary among museums and churches.

Why does the community have this need?:

Florence is one of the greatest art hubs in the world, and a lot of time, energy, and money are required to keep its objects available for generations of audiences to enjoy.

Is this need being met? How?:

This need is being met by museum admissions prices, church donations, and people like me who work in conservation and restoration.
