What main languages are spoken here?:

The main language spoken here is Spanish. However, many people in Argentina also have Italian roots because a large number of immigrants came here from Italy many years ago. Because of this history, Italian has also been an important language in the country. In fact, many people here are able to get Italian citizenship through their grandparents or great-grandparents!

Portuguese is another language you may hear, since Brazil is right next to Argentina. Many younger people, especially university students, also speak English. Buenos Aires also has a large immigrant community from China, so Mandarin Chinese is spoken in some neighborhoods as well.

The currency used in Argentina is called the Argentine peso. Right now, one U.S. dollar is equal to about $1,396 Argentine pesos. Prices in Argentina have been rising very quickly over the past few years, which is called inflation. Because of this, it takes many more pesos to equal one U.S. dollar.

How much does a bottle of water cost?:

It depends on where you buy it. If you go to a kiosco (a small corner store), a botella de agua (a bottle of water) usually costs around $2,000 pesos.
