Meet Mary Patience: A Girl in Uganda

Introduction:

Hello! My name is Mary Patience. I am a pupil in P3 at Teacher Emily's school. Read this field note to learn about me and my life as a kid in Uganda!

What do you eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner?:

For breakfast, I eat sweet potatoes (which are actually white here in Uganda), chapati and yams. When I am at school, we eat beans and posho. When I am not at school, I like eating millet, beef with tomatoes, and greens. My favorite food to eat for dinner is fish and millet!

What is your house like?:

My house is a semi-permanent house. It is made of mud and iron sheets.

What chores do you have at home?:

At home, I sweep the compound and wash plates. I also like helping my grandmother with other chores, such as washing clothes.

What jobs do your parents have?:

I live with my grandmother. In Uganda, we call grandmothers "jaja". My jaja is just a peasant farmer.

What time does school start, and what time do you go home?:

School starts at 8:00 a.m. It ends at 3:00 p.m. Teacher Emily tells me this is very similar to schools in America. We have morning break from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m. I usually drink tea or eat a snack during this time. Then, lunch is from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Sometimes, I eat at school.
