After arriving in Uganda, I stayed at a hotel in Kampala, the nation's capital, for about a week before I moved to Mbarara: The Land of Milk and Wi-Fi. Mbarara is a big town in the southwestern region of Uganda and is a four-hour journey from Kampala.
My research mentor in Mbarara arranged an apartment for me, which I was taken to directly upon arriving. I was impressed when I saw it asthe apartment exceeded my expectations. It is a furnished, two-bedroom apartment with a living room, bathroom, and kitchen. The living room has a dining table with four chairs, an armchair, a two-seater couch as well as a bookshelf. In the kitchen, there is a stove with a gas cylinder, a sink, and a microwave. There is also a shelf on the wall where the cookwareis stored. The bathroom is designed with tiles and has a shower, a sink, a flush toilet and a water heater. There is also a big mirror.
I work in a small office with my research mentor at the Mbarara University of Science and Technology Referral Hospital. The hospital is only a ten-minute walk from my apartment, so I commute on foot every morning. My work hours are usually from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 or 6:00 p.m. (depending on how much work I have). I also go into the field sometimes where a research team and I visit and interview cancer patients.
