Empanadas de Chiverre

Introduction:

The holy week in Costa Rica starts on Palm Sunday and ends on Easter Sunday. Even though I had spring break during this time, the cooks at my dorm prepared us some sweet treats in advance so we could enjoy this Costa Rican tradition together. These treats were Empanadas de Chiverre.

What tradition did I learn about?:

Empanadas de Chiverre (Chiverre Empanadas) are an important food in Costa Rica. The flour-based empanadas are often cooked together with families and baked in the oven instead of fried. This snack also pairs nicely with the Costa Rican coffee tradition, where coffee is served around 10:00 a.m. and from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. every day. The cooks put out fresh coffee for students to enjoy in between classes. I also got to enjoy these sweet empanadas for breakfast!

Why does the community have this tradition?:

Semana Santa translates to "the holy week" in Spanish. In Costa Rica, the majority of the country is Catholic, so many businesses and schools will close down to observe Good Friday and Easter. This also means they prepare special foods to celebrate.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

The filling of this pastry is chiverre, which is a type of large squash (In English its called the fig leaf gourd).
