It makes me ask myself: Could I have done the same?
For me, this is why we are here, and this is why it is important to locate and map the wreck of Endurance. We do so in order to honor Shackleton’s legacy, gather further insight into one of the greatest survival stories of all time and to celebrate human perseverance. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, students, teachers, families and friends have tapped the spirit of Sir Ernest Shackleton, rising to the many challenges we face together… enduring. Onboard the S.A. Agulhas II, I see the sub-sea team working around the clock to deploy the AUV to the seafloor. I see the ship’s crew working around the clock to keep everyone fed and safe in this harsh environment. As the Shackleton family motto says, Fortitudine Vincimus (Latin for “By endurance we conquer”)—and so we shall.
