Meet Irina! What is life like for kids in Finland?

Usually it starts around 8:30 am, and I go home at 1:45 pm.

How do you get to school? Are you allowed to go to school by yourself?:

I usually go to school by bus or by car. I am allowed to go alone by bus - even children as young as five take the public bus by themselves.

Where do you eat lunch? What is your favorite food?:

At school, in the cafeteria. I do not know what my favorite food is. Maybe tuna subs from Subway?

What language do you speak at school? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

I speak Finnish. We say "Moi." By the fifth or sixth grade, we also take Swedish and English as foreign languages.

What are some common kids' names at your school?:

Hmmm... "Nea", "Veeti", certainly.  Everyone has such a unique name nowadays - Oh, and "Lumi".

What subjects do you study in school, and which one is your favorite?:

I take Religion, P.E., English, Swedish, Art, Finnish, German, Math, Music, History, Handcrafts and Textile Arts, and Geography. I like P.E. and Art the best.

What is your homework like?:

It depends on the class. Some assignments are in an exercise book, while others are in a booklet or done on the iPad.

What do you like to do after school? Do you have a favorite sport or game?:

I go home, use my phone, do my homework and draw or go to my hobbies. I am involved in dance and theater programs after school. My favorite sports are dance, and gymnastics at school.

Who is your favorite famous person?:

Dan Reynolds or Lily James.
