The Life of an Elementary Student in the Provinces

And we don't say "hello," we just say "hi." Mayad nga aga is "good morning," magad nga hapon is "good afternoon," and mayad nga gabie is "good evening" in our language.

What are some common kids' names at your school?:

Julia, Chloe, Kiera or maybe a Jonna or an Alfredo. Kendrick, Cedric, Clint and Xine (pronounced "see-an"), too. There’s a boy named Prince, and we sometimes joke that it’s Princess, and then he’ll chase us around. Then there’s Nathaniel and Ben.

What subjects do you study in school, and which one is your favorite?:

All of the subjects are science, English, MAPEH (music, arts, physical education, and health), and A.P. (Araling Panlipunan, or history). Science and English are my favorite. They’re always so much fun, and the teachers are very nice.

What is your homework like?:

It’s hard, but sometimes easy. When it’s hard, you spend hours on it, and you might think you have the right answer, but then it’s not. When it’s easy, you can just solve it and then go off and do whatever you want. For math, our homework is equations. For MAPEH, there is no homework. Then for English, we sometimes have homework. It’s pretty easy. We just write stories or read books.

What do you like to do after school? Do you have a favorite sport or game?:

After school, I just like to go home. Before I come home, I stop at my mom’s office, then sometimes we go to the park. Then, I watch YouTube on my phone. I don’t like TikTok. I like badminton, volleyball and dodgeball. They’re very fun to play.
