The Province of Antique: Where the Mountains Meet the Sea

Introduction:

The province of Antique was historically referred to as Hantík, a local term for large black ants found throughout the region. There are many different kinds of ants in my community, but these are not the only critters that make Antique unique! Home to the Visayan hornbill, spotted deer, warty pig and plenty of other flora and fauna, Antique boasts many unique life forms and landscapes.

With beautiful rolling mountains to the east and the vast Sulu Sea to the west, this province is a great place to be as an Environmental Peace Corps volunteer. Working in my town hall’s Municipal Agriculture office, I get to interact not only with the unique local environment, but also with the many people that rely on its natural resources!

What makes this environment special or different?:

The province of Antique is one of three provinces on the island of Panay. Antique is an elongated stretch of land running almost 100 miles from north to south, and some people say it is shaped like a seahorse!

The Sulu Sea is to the west, while the eastern stretches of the province are green, rugged mountains. The shoreline in my community is very rocky and characterized by dark, black sand, whereas islands to the north have soft, white sand scattered with intricate seashells.
