Children like chasing the squirrels, so they were very jumpy and it almost looked like they were flying! These squirrels certainly were not afraid of humans!
The squirrels mostly live in the park. It is a very large park and they live in the trees. Their homes are inside small holes in the trees with nests built from leaves, moss and grass. During the winter, their fur will change and become thicker to protect them fom the cold. In the summer, this thicker coat will be shed off!
The squirrels often collect many nuts and acorns from the forest where they live and store them as excess food. They live in the trees, which helps protect them from bad weather and the cold. They are also omnivores, meaning they are able to eat both plants and animals. If they can't find the plants that they need to eat, they can eat other small animals and insects to survive.
Cutting down trees can destroy the homes of the red squirrels. Introducing new types of squirrels can also harm the red squirrels. Owls, other birds and small animals are all dangers for the squirrels. The population of red squirrels is decreasing in Europe, which means there are less red squirrels than before. Now, some countries are working on protecting the squirrels and their habitats.
