Our News

What main languages are spoken here?:

English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil are the four main languages in Singapore. There is also a local dialect of English called Singlish. A lot of terms in Singlish are hard to pinpoint in meaning, but I have had a much easier time understanding people than I expected I would.

What type of money is used here?:

Sinagpore uses the Singaporean dollar (SGD). At the time of writing this, 1 SGD equals about 79 cents USD.

How much does a bottle of water cost?:

The price of a bottle of water depends on where you buy it, but it's usually between 1 and 3 SGD. That's about $0.79-$2.39, so it's quite similar to prices in the US. The tap water in Singapore is very safe, and there are also many places to fill up a water bottle, so I prefer to use my metal bottle.

What was the best meal this week?:

The best meal I had this week was chicken and beef satay from Lau Pa Sat, a famous food market downtown. The line was so long, but it all made sense after I tried it. The meat is put on a skewer and cooked over hot charcoal. It costs 9 SGD for 10 sticks, which is a little pricy for how much food it is, but they were very good nonetheless. The meat is super tender and slightly sweet by itself, and a chunky sweet peanut sauce is served alongside it. I didn't test this theory, but I could probably eat upwards of 50-60 of them in a sitting!
