Fasching/Fastnacht/Karneval "Carnival" in Germany

The highlight of Fasching is receiving candies tossed from people dressed up in costumes on parade floats similar to trick-or-treating during Halloween. Two of the most famous Fasching parades are held in the German cities of Dusseldorf and Koln "Cologne", which I had the pleasure of visiting with my friends.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

Fasching is increasingly being made more environmentally friendly throughout Germany as it is a resource-heavy festival. For example, people are starting to give out organic candy and reduce waste during parades. Some towns also engage in initiatives to plant more trees to offset CO2 emissions from carnival floats. People are also choosing to wear costumes made of recyclable, sustainable materials.
